Boozhoo! Massibkwe ndzhinikaaz, makwa ndoodem, Naotkamegwanning ndoonji.
Greetings, my name is Alexa Lesperance. I’m an Anishinaabe bear clan kwe/woman originating from Whitefish Bay First Nation in Treaty #3 Northwestern Ontario and Rocky Bay First Nation located in the Robinson-Superior Treaty area. I did my medical school training at NOSM in Thunder Bay, and my residency training at the UBC Indigenous family medicine program. As a new to practice Family Physician, I’m starting off with locum/ contract work; with the goal to permanently practice within Northwestern Ontario. The last 10 years of training to become a doctor had truthfully, been a very long and difficult journey. However, now being on the other side, I see that it was well worth the effort. I’ve been so blessed to have helpers that have guided, mentored and supported me the entire way. There is so much power in seeing yourself reflected within the room, and especially within health care. My hope is to help our people have the flexibility of being able to use our traditional medicines and western medicines to keep us well.
Chi miigwech, all my relations.
